Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) for Smart Manufacturing

Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) for Smart Manufacturing

Learn about Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) and why it’s vital for manufacturers to shift from Manufacturing Execution System (MES) to MOM by using a smart business management platform like Enterpryze.

Manufacturing Execution System (MES) vs. Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM)

Ever since the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0) was introduced last decade, other related concepts such as ‘smart manufacturing’ and supply chain digitalisation are being developed and adopted by industry players, especially the manufacturing industry.

In our previous article, we’ve covered the definition of smart manufacturing and how it benefits manufacturing SMEs – by increasing production efficiency while reducing costs. Read the article here to know what smart manufacturing is.

Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and Manufacturing Operation Management (MOM) are two different systems that have distinct purposes in the manufacturing industry. Prior to the widespread adoption of smart manufacturing, manufacturers traditionally used Manufacturing Execution System (MES), that was initiated in the early 1990s.

MES focuses on the execution of specific production processes and provides real-time data and control over production operations. It tracks the production process from start to finish, ensuring that the production schedule is followed, and quality standards are followed.

MOM, which started in the early 2000s, encompasses a broader scope of the manufacturing operations, including planning, scheduling, and monitoring of processes. It provides an overview of the entire manufacturing process and helps in making informed decisions on production schedules, resource allocation, and overall production efficiency.

MES is typically performed using a computerized system, with data being collected through sensors, barcode scanning, and manual input, whilst MOM is performed by utilising a combination of software, hardware, technologies (such as AI, IIoT, and cloud computing) and human intervention to manage and optimise the entire manufacturing process.

MES is considered to be a part of MOM, as MOM goes beyond the manufacturing floor to warehouse management, supply-chain management, and inventory management systems. In summary, MES provides operational visibility and control, while MOM provides strategic visibility and decision support.

Thanks to IR 4.0, the manufacturing industry is making a shift from MES to Manufacturing Operation Management (MOM) so that they can have more production flexibility and create more customised products efficiently at a reduced cost.

Benefits of Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM)

Here are the benefits of a well-implemented Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM):

#1: Improved Product Quality
MOM implementation in a smart manufacturing environment helps in making manufacturing processes become more structured and efficient. This in turn contributes to improved product consistency and overall quality.

When product quality is improved, customer satisfaction will also increase as long as manufacturers continue maintaining or improving their product quality, while accurately fulfilling customer orders.

#2: Lower Rate of Waste or Emissions
With a well-implemented Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM), manufacturers can reduce the amount of waste or emissions coming from the raw materials used during production – making the whole manufacturing process more sustainable.

#3: Increased Workforce Efficiency
As Smart Manufacturing and MOM require different information from different functional teams to come together to a single source or platform, workforce efficiency can also be increased. All the data collected from functional teams will help the system to better plan productions and reduce raw material wastage.

#4: Improved and Easier Compliance with Regulations
Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) helps manufacturers to follow and comply with government regulations in a more structured manner – thanks to planned and properly-scheduled production.

#5: Maximised Margins and Reduced Business Costs
As MOM helps manufacturers optimise their workforce, reduce waste, use less energy, and increase production capacity while ensuring high product quality, manufacturers can maximise margins while reducing costs. This is of course when efficient manufacturing processes are consistently well-managed.

Why is Enterpryze the Perfect Business Management Platform for Manufacturers Implementing Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM)?

Enterpryze, a cloud-based Business Management Platform (BMP) helps the implementation of MOM by making processes run more efficiently. With our drag-and-drop production scheduling feature, production managers can properly plan processes and have bigger visibility on the entire production process.

With Enterpryze, manufacturers can also allocate or move stock and materials across multiple production locations easily based on the product Bill of Materials (BOM).

Manufacturers can better plan the restocking of items by having the real-time stock balance across multiple warehouses with suggested reorder quantity and committed quantity. By using our Bill of Materials (BOM) feature too, manufacturers can re-order stock that are low in availability based on the product Bill of Materials or track any ongoing purchase orders to see if the purchase has been made.

Last but not least, our cloud-based platform can easily be accessed by functional team members, via web or via mobile apps which allows team members to effectively contribute towards better production planning and strategised decision-making.
